Angels claim Nieves off waivers
Wednesday December 18, 2002ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The World Series champion Anaheim Angels claimed catcher Wilbert Nieves off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old Nieves played 28 games for the Padres last season, hitting .181 with three RBIs. He also played in 70 games for Portland of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, hitting .308 with seven homers and 29 RBIs.
Nieves, picked by the Padres in the 47th round of the 1995 draft, has until Dec. 23 to decide whether he will accept the claim or become a free agent.
