Angels trim roster to 25
Sunday March 30, 2003ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Anaheim Angels got their roster down to the 25-man limit, sending four position players and three pitchers to the minors Saturday night.
After closing the exhibition season with a 6-5 loss to Los Angeles, the World Series champs optioned infielders Alfredo Amezaga and Chone Figgins, catcher Wil Nieves, outfielder Jeff DaVanon and left-hander Mark Lukasiewicz to Triple-A Salt Lake. They also reassigned lefty Rich Rodriguez and righty Doug Nickle to Triple-A.
Right-hander Matt Wise, who had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his elbow, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day disabled list to make room for outfielder Julio Ramirez. The Angels purchased Ramirez's contract from Salt Lake.
The Angels are starting the season with 11 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders and five outfielders.
