Fullerton SS Turner hit in the face by pitch
Thursday June 19, 2003OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Cal State Fullerton shortstop Justin Turner was hit in the face by a pitch in the third inning Thursday night in the College World Series.
Turner was attempting to bunt when the pitch from Stanford's Matt Manship came at him. He turned to avoid the pitch, but the ball hit him in the face. With his face bloodied and swollen, Turner left the game assisted by trainers.
He was later taken to Bergan Mercy Hospital for precautionary X-rays that revealed contusions but no fractures. He also sprained his ankle trying to avoid the pitch.
No teeth were broken.
Five Titans were hit by pitches Thursday, setting a CWS record for hit batters in a game on the same team. After Turner was hit, teammates wore his number, 23, on their hats.
Stanford pitchers have hit 12 batters in five CWS games, also a record. The old mark also was held by Stanford, which hit nine batters in four games in 1997.
Fullerton players have been hit 11 times in this series, another CWS record. The previous record of eight was set by Missouri in 1952 and tied by Texas on Wednesday night.
