Cal State Fullerton 8, Notre Dame 1

Sunday June 01, 2003

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) Right-hander Dustin Miller allowed just one run through eight innings and Jason Corapci was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as the Cal State Fullerton Titans advanced to the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals Sunday with an 8-1 win over the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

``My best pitch all day was my changeup and I think that I threw it for a strike at least 90 percent of the time. I was able to mix in my fastball and curve in order to fool the hitters, but it was mainly my change that took me through this game,'' Miller said.

Miller (8-2) struck out 10 Irish players and scattered nine hits without a walk. He was treated to a standing ovation as he left the game in the ninth in favor of Sean Martin who, after a leadoff single by Kris Billmaier, struckout pinch hitter Tim Murray and induced Greg Lopez to line into a double play to close out the Titans' victory.

Three Notre Dame relievers held the Titans to just a run on three hits the rest of the way.

Peter Ogilvie (2-4) allowed five earned runs on nine hits in 2 2-3 innings for the loss.

Notre Dame (45-18) finally broke through against Miller in the seventh as Cody Rizzo doubled down the left field line and came home on a run-scoring fielder's choice by catcher Javi Sanchez.

Fullerton (46-13) will meet Arizona State in a best-of-three series next weekend.

``Our pitching was amazing,'' said Titans coach George Horton. ``Dustin (Miller), (Ryan) Schreppel, and (Jason) Windsor were the keys that help turn the motor, but defense and little ball helped us win all three games. I think that winning the regional in three games is a little bit of a relief.''
