River Cats 4, Cubs 3
Saturday July 26, 2003WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Justin Duchscherer pitched eight impressive innings and Graham Koonce sparked the offense in the Sacramento River Cats' 4-3 victory over the Iowa Cubs.
Koonce, Sacramento's first baseman and clean-up hitter, had the game-winning RBI on a single in the bottom of the eighth. The River Cats then loaded the bases but did not score.
Duchscherer, the River Cats starter, improved to 10-2. He allowed six hits and three runs, struck out six and walked none.
After Koonce's home run in the second made it 1-1, Iowa took a 2-1 lead in the third on Augie Ojeda's home run. Sacramento shortstop Bobby Crosby's triple in the sixth scored Chris Prieto, tying it at 3-3.
Koonce was then intentionally walked, giving the River Cats runners on first and third with no outs. But Mike Edwards grounded into a double play, ending the rally.
Iowa starter Mike Wuertz pitched five innings, striking out six, walking one and allowing three hits and two runs.
