Friday June 20, 2003FRESNO, Calif. (AP) Five home runs carried the Omaha Royals to an 8-2 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies during a Pacific Coast League contest Thursday.
Grizzlies right-hander Brian Powell, who entered the game with the fourth-best ERA in the PCL (2.75), gave up back-to-back home runs to Benny Agbayani and Jed Hansen in the second inning.
Jarrod Patterson then hit a three-run homer in the third, and Mike Kelly followed with another solo shot in the fifth, giving the Royals a 6-0 lead. Julius Matos hit the fifth home run in the sixth inning.
Altogether, the homers accounted for seven of the Royals' runs.
The feat tied a Grizzlies' franchise record for most home runs given up by a single pitcher. Joe Nathan was the last Fresno pitcher to give up five home runs on . Powell's ERA dropped to 3.32 when he left the game after six innings.
The Grizzlies got on the board with a home run of their own when Cody Ransom launched a two-run homer in the fifth.
The Royals now have 74 home runs this year, second-most in the PCL.
