Omaha 6, Fresno 1
Wednesday June 18, 2003FRESNO, Calif. (AP) The Omaha Royals defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 6-1 in the Pacific Coast League teams' first outing of the year.
The Grizzlies watched their one-run first-inning lead quickly vanish due to defensive errors. In the second inning, Grizzlies third-baseman Lance Niekro made a bad throw to first, putting runners on the corners for Omaha.
The Royals capitalized on the opportunity, driving in the tying run on a Jed Hansen single. Then a ball bounced off Grizzlies first-baseman Tony Torcato's glove in the third inning, and Juan Brito made it from first base to home for the go-ahead run while Torcato chased the ball.
Not until the sixth did the Royals score an earned run. When Grizzlies starter Jeff Urban left after that inning, the Royals scored three runs off the Grizzlies' bullpen.
Clay Bellinger's double in the second inning was the Grizzlies' only extra-base hit of the game.
