Tuesday November 26, 2002

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Former Detroit manager Luis Pujols will be the first base coach for Felipe Alou, who is keeping three holdovers on his San Francisco Giants' staff.

Remaining from former manager Dusty Baker's staff are pitching coach Dave Righetti, hitting coach Joe Lefebvre and bench coach Ron Wotus, who will be in his fifth year as bench coach. Lefebvre was first base coach last season.

Gene Glynn will serve as third base coach and Mark Gardner as bullpen coach, the Giants said Tuesday. Pujols and Glynn worked on Alou's staff in Montreal, where ge managed from 1992 to 2001. Alou, 67, was hired by the Giants on Nov. 13.

Gardner, who played for the Expos under Alou, will make his coaching debut.

Righetti, 43, will begin his fourth season as the club's pitching coach. He has guided Giants pitchers to a 3.98 ERA, including a 3.54 mark in 2002 when San Francisco won the National League pennant and lost to Anaheim in the World Series. That was the team's lowest ERA since 1989, the last time the Giants reached the World Series.

Alou and Pujols have worked together nine of the past 10 years. Alou was Pujols' bench coach this year with the Tigers.

Glynn, 46, enters his 10th season as a major league coach in 2003. He spent the last three seasons as the third base coach with the Cubs, after serving as Alou's first base coach with the Expos in 1999. He also worked on the Rockies coaching staff from 1994-98, the first two seasons as the first base coach and the last two as the third base coach.

The 40-year-old Gardner returns to the Giants after retiring as a pitcher following the 2001 season. He had a 99-93 career average with one save and a 4.56 ERA playing for the Expos, Royals, Marlins and Giants.
