Giants rookie goes on disabled list

Thursday August 21, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The San Francisco Giants put rookie right-hander Jesse Foppert on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with an inflamed nerve in his pitching arm.

Foppert left his start against the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning on Wednesday night after experiencing numbness in his right palm. He is 8-9 with a 5.03 ERA in his first full season with the Giants, who put him in their starting rotation out of spring training.

Foppert has an inflammation of his ulnar nerve, according to trainer Stan Conte.

``Pretty much my whole palm was numb,'' said Foppert, whose arm felt fine an hour after leaving the game. ``It felt like I was throwing a grapefruit.''

The Giants recalled outfielder Todd Linden from Triple-A Fresno to replace Foppert. Linden was sent to Fresno on Wednesday when newly acquired second baseman Eric Young reported to the team.

Foppert's injury is the latest blow in a lengthy series of injuries for the Giants' pitching staff. Every member of San Francisco's opening day rotation has missed time because of injuries.

Fortunately for the Giants, left-hander Kirk Rueter will return from the disabled list on Sunday to pitch against the Florida Marlins. Rueter, 7-3 with a 4.30 ERA, has been out since Aug. 1 with a strained shoulder, but he has been cleared to pitch after making a rehabilitation start earlier this week.

All-Star Jason Schmidt, Sidney Ponson, rookie Jerome Williams and journeyman Dustin Hermanson also are in the rotation, though manager Felipe Alou would like to start promising rookie Kevin Correia in an upcoming game.
