Arenas officially joins Wizards

Friday August 08, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) Gilbert Arenas officially became a member of the Washington Wizards on Friday after the deadline passed for the Golden State Warriors to match his offer sheet.

The Wizards signed Arenas to a six-year, $65 million deal on July 22. The Warriors had 15 days to match the offer because Arenas was a restricted free agent, but they couldn't because of salary cap constraints.

The Warriors have since signed Speedy Claxton to play point guard.

Arenas was selected as the NBA's Most Improved Player last season after averaging 18.3 points, 6.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds. The 21-year-old point guard was a second-round pick by Golden State in the 2001 draft.
