Austin, Lawrence fight to a draw
Sunday February 16, 2003LAUGHLIN, Nev. (AP) Veteran heavyweight Ray Austin, of Cleveland, and Zuri Lawrence, of Wappinger Falls, New York, battled to a draw in their nationally televised 10-round main event at the Flamingo Laughlin Hotel and Casino on Saturday night.
There were no knockdowns in the bout and neither fighter was hurt or in danger of going down.
Austin won by a score of 96-94 on one judge's scorecard while the other two judges had it even 95-95. Austin weighed in at 246 pounds. The 42-year-old fighter has a 17-3-2 record with 13 knockouts.
Lawrence, 32, weighed 235 and now has a record of 18-4 with no knockouts.
In the other main event, undefeated super welterweight prospect Anthony Thompson of Philadelphia upped his record to 9-0 with seven knockouts by stopping James Buggs of Oakland, Calif. by technical knockout at 1:15 of the second round in their bout scheduled for six rounds.
Buggs is now 3-3-1 with no knockouts.
