ESPN to make movie about '67 Ice Bowl

Wednesday April 02, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) Pro football is the subject of ESPN's next original TV movie, which will focus on events surrounding the 1967 Ice Bowl between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers.

The movie is scheduled to air Dec. 13 at 9 p.m. EST on the sports cable channel.

Joe Eszterhas, whose movies include ``Basic Instinct'' and ``Jagged Edge,'' will write the script in his first project since being diagnosed with throat cancer two years ago.

``It's a great human drama of the elements, strength and will,'' Eszterhas said.

The game was played on Dec. 31, 1967, when the temperature was below zero in Green Bay and the Lambeau Field turf was frozen. The Packers rallied to win in the closing seconds.

Two of the movie's principals will be Dallas coach Tom Landry and Green Bay coach Vince Lombardi. Casting has not yet been announced.

``The Ice Bowl'' will be ESPN's third original movie project. Its first was ``A Season on the Brink'' about former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight, and its second was ``The Junction Boys'' about the late football coach Bear Bryant.
