K-State's Newman wins defensive back award

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) Kansas State cornerback Terence Newman won the Thorpe Award on Thursday night as the nation's top defensive back.

Newman had five interceptions for the Wildcats and also scored four touchdowns two on punts returns, one on a kick return and another on a pass reception.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior won the award over Ohio State's Mike Doss and USC's Troy Polamalu. Oklahoma safety Roy Williams won the award last year.

The announcement was made during the Home Depot college football awards show on ESPN.
