UCLA hires Brian Schneider as assistant coach
Sunday February 02, 2003LOS ANGELES (AP) UCLA coach Karl Dorrell completed his first staff Sunday with the hiring of Brian Schneider as outside linebackers and nickel backs coach.
The 31-year-old Schneider coached tight ends and coordinated special teams at Colorado State the past six years. He spent three seasons as a graduate assistant coach at the school before moving to full-time status in 1997.
The university also announced that Robert Lopez has been hired as director of football operations. He will run the administrative side of the UCLA football program.
Lopez served as executive director of enrollment services and director of admissions at Wisconsin-Eau Claire since April 2001. Before entering the college admissions field, he spent 14 years coaching football at the high school, junior college and college levels.
Dorrell and Lopez worked together in 1990-91 at Northern Arizona University, where Dorrell was the football team's offensive coordinator and Lopez served as recruiting coordinator.
The 39-year-old Dorrell was hired to succeed Bob Toledo as coach of the Bruins in December. Toledo was fired after seven years on the job.
