Trojans starting QB knocked out of game

Saturday October 04, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart left Saturday's game against Arizona State in the second quarter with an injured right leg.

Leinart's knee and ankle were X-rayed and he was replaced by Matt Cassel.

The injury occurred on USC's first play after Arizona State went ahead 10-7 on a field goal 23 seconds into the second quarter.

Leinart dropped back, and linebacker Justin Burks sacked him for a 4-yard loss as Leinart tumbled awkwardly in a crowd of players.

Leinart was 6-for-9 for 131 yards, including a 57-yard scoring pass to Keary Colbert, and one interception in the first quarter.
