Flames 2, Kings 1, OT
Saturday April 05, 2003CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Jarome Iginla got a little carried away with the significance of Calgary's victory in its home finale.
``This result is going to help us,'' Iginla said Friday night after Calgary beat Los Angeles 2-1 in overtime.
``It's important that we get in the right attitude playing at home, become a stronger home team, and get in the right habits. You look at playoff teams and they're all above .500 at home.''
Craig Conroy scored 2:13 into overtime as the Flames snapped a three-game winless streak. Calgary finished 14-16-10-1 at home, missing the NHL playoffs for a seventh consecutive season, the longest current drought in the league.
Conroy rushed the Kings' net and fended off defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky before flipped a high shot over goalie Cristobal Huet's blocker for his 20th goal of the season.
``I went backhand and then forehand and I just tried to get it up quick and luckily it went over his shoulder,'' Conroy said. ``We're trying to prove to the fans that we have a lot of pride and we want to win at home.''
Roman Turek was solid in Calgary's goal, stopping 30 shots. His best save came with three minutes left when he made a glove stop on a breakaway by Alexander Frolov.
Frolov had a good chance to put the Kings ahead early in the third, but lost control of the puck on a three-on-one as he cut across the front of the net.
Chris Drury also scored for Calgary.
Ziggy Palffy scored for Los Angeles, which will miss the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.
``It's tough to win with just one goal,'' Palffy said. ``Calgary's below us in the standings and we've got to score some goals on them, winning a game with just one goal is very hard.''< ^Notes:@ Los Angeles defenseman Aaron Miller missed the game because of back spasms, limiting the Kings to 19 players. ... Calgary recalled Rick Mrozik from Saint John of the AHL to replace defenseman Bob Boughner, who lacerated a tendon in his right wrist Wednesday night.
