Sharks 3, Oilers 3
Friday April 04, 2003EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Teemu Selanne's late goal couldn't get the San Jose Sharks a rare road win.
Selanne scored his second goal of the game with 41 seconds left in regulation to give the San Jose Sharks a 3-3 tie with the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.
Selanne slid a low shot to the short side past Edmonton goaltender Jussi Markkanen to send the game into overtime. However, the Sharks couldn't pull out a win, and have just one victory in their last 11 road games.
``It wasn't a pretty game,'' Selanne said.
San Jose goaltender Vesa Toskala made several difficult saves, including a stop on Mike Comrie on a penalty shot midway through the second period. Comrie had been hauled down by Kyle McLaren on a breakaway.
``It was still close to going in my five hole, but I was lucky,'' Toskala said. ``I got my pad there and it didn't go in.''
Alyn McCauley also scored for the Sharks. Vincent Damphousse had two assists.
Edmonton is undefeated in seven games (4-0-3-0). The last time the Oilers lost was March 20, when Phoenix beat them 3-2 in overtime.
Fernando Pisani scored two goals, both on breakaways, and Ryan Smyth added his 27th of the season for Edmonton.
The Oilers had most of the offensive chances early, but the Sharks found some energy late in the game. The Oilers outshot San Jose 40-20, including 25-11 over the first two periods and 5-2 in the extra period.
Smyth gave Edmonton a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes left in the third when he swatted in a puck from the side of the crease.
Pisani tied the game at 1 with 3:56 left in the first period and gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead with a short-handed goal at 7:34 of the second.
The 26-year-old Edmonton native made his NHL debut Jan. 8 and now has eight goals on 32 shots in 34 games. Pisani left the game in the opening seconds of the third after being hit in the mouth by another player's shoulder. He did not return.
``He's played well,'' Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. ``We've got to find him some more ice time. It was tough after he got dinged in the first shift of the third period but he played exceptionally well.''
It was Markkanen's third start in Edmonton's last four games, during which he has gone 1-0-2. < ^Notes@: Comrie is 0-for-2 in his career on penalty shots.
