Four UNR baseball players picked in MLB draft
Tuesday June 03, 2003RENO, Nev. (AP) Four university of Nevada players were selected in the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday, including senior third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and junior pitcher Mateo Miramontes.
Kouzmanoff, the Western Athletic Conference's Player of the Year, and Miramontes, a right-handed starter, were back-to-back picks in the sixth round.
The Cleveland Indians drafted Kouzmanoff as the 168th pick overall and the New York Mets made Miramontes the 169th selection.
The Boston Red Sox picked senior Nevada relief pitcher Zak Basch in the 13th round and junior center fielder Chris Dickerson was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 16th round.
Kouzmanoff of Evergreen, Colo., led the WAC this season in home runs (17), RBIs (67) and total bases (147). The 17 home runs tied for the third best single season in school history and the 67 RBI tied for the eighth best single season at Nevada.
Miramontes of Danville, Calif., posted a 9-5 record with a 4.97 ERA and 79 strikeouts this past season. He earned second team all-WAC honors in 2002 and was a freshman All-America in 2001 after posting a 10-3 record. In three seasons at Nevada, his record is 25-16 with a 5.15 ERA, 259 strikeouts, and 311.1 innings pitched. The wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched all rank second in school history.
