Five inducted into Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame
Saturday February 08, 2003LAS VEGAS (AP) Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux and free agent pitcher Mike Morgan were among five people inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.
Also included in the Hall of Fame's Class of 2002 Friday were former major league pitcher Mike Maddux, brother of Greg Maddux, former UNLV softball pitcher Lori Harrigan and longtime high school baseball coach Rodger Fairless.
All the inductees said their time in Las Vegas greatly influenced their careers. The Maddux brothers and Morgan all graduated from Las Vegas high schools.
``We were able to play 12 months a year,'' said Morgan, a member of the 2001 world champion Arizona Diamondbacks who is now a free agent.
``We had scouts coming by when we were 10, 11, 12 years old. It was a tight-knit community back then. Everyone in town knew each other.''
Mike Maddux pitched for 15 seasons in the majors and is now the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Harrigan was a star pitcher for UNLV's softball team in the early 1990s and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
