UNLV claims its best recruiting class in five years
Wednesday February 05, 2003LAS VEGAS (AP) UNLV landed a mix of size, speed and strength in what Rebels Coach John Robinson described as the best recruiting class in his five-year tenure.
The university announced Wednesday that 28 players from six states make up the 2003 Rebels recruiting class. The list features 19 freshmen, eight junior college players and one transfer from Ohio State University.
``It's clearly our best class,'' Robinson said. ``We were able to target our needs and fill them very successfully. We have a number of players who arrived this semester that will have a big impact immediately.''
The class includes 16 offensive and nine defensive players, a place-kicker and two players with experience on both sides of the ball. The signees hail from California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Alabama and Georgia.
One of the bright spots in the class is running back Alvin Marshall, a first team junior college All-American who originally signed with the University of Nebraska out of Locke High School, Los Angeles.
JaJa Riley, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound transfer from Ohio State is also being touted as a potential star for the Rebels. Riley, who has two years of eligibility remaining, must sit out this season because of eligibility rules.
