SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Dwayne De Rosario had a hat trick and Landon Donovan scored twice as the San Jose Earthquakes routed the Dallas Burn 5-2 on Saturday to clinch home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
De Rosario scored his first goal just 11 seconds into the game, the fastest goal in league history. He set a San Jose team record with seven points overall.
Donovan's two goals broke open a 2-2 tie. In the 24th minute he scored on a left-footed shot to make it 3-2, and in the 35th minute he scored on a header to give San Jose a 4-2 lead.
DeRosario scored his third goal in the 48th minute to make the final 5-2.
Ezra Hendrickson and Ali Curtis both scored for Dallas.
