Schmid signs contract with Galaxy

Friday March 28, 2003

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) Sigi Schmid signed a multiyear contract with the MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday.

Schmid's original contract, signed in 1999, expired at the end of last season, when he guided the Galaxy to its first MLS Cup title.

The 50-year-old Schmid has led the Galaxy to a 61-35-16 record, guiding the team to the MLS Cup in 1999, 2001 and 2002 and was named MLS coach of the year following his first season as the team's coach.

The Galaxy lost in the MLS Cup in its first two tries before winning last year.

``I am excited and very proud that the Los Angeles Galaxy has shown its confidence in me with a new contract to continue as the club's head coach,'' Schmid said. ``There is still a lot of work to do and I have goals that I want to achieve both individually and with the club.''

Terms of the contract were not announced.
