Saturday April 19, 2003

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- First-half goals by Mia Hamm and Lori Lindsey sparked the first-place Washington Freedom to a 2-0 victory over the San Jose CyberRays on Saturday afternoon in Women's United Soccer Association action.

Hamm, the WUSA's second-leading scorer with seven points, scored on a penalty kick in the ninth minute, putting the ball into the far right corner.

Lindsey scored on a nice header less than a minute before halftime. Jacqui Little made a crossing pass from the right side to Lindsey, who was about even with the left post. Lindsey then headed the ball into the right side of the net past diving San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene.

San Jose's best chance to score came in the 29th minute when Brandi Chastain's header from 10 yards out went over the goal. The CyberRays had only two shots on goal in the first half, while Washington had five.

Washington improved its record to 3-0 for the first time in franchise history and moved into first place in the WUSA ahead of Atlanta, which is 2-0. The CyperRays fell to 1-1.
