Newport Beach completes roster
Wednesday April 02, 2003NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) The Newport Beach Breakers drafted Australian doubles specialist Josh Eagle and teenagers Maria Sharapova and Shenay Perry on Wednesday to join Lindsay Davenport for their inaugural World TeamTennis season.
The Breakers also obtained Brian MacPhie, the league's male MVP from 1996-98, in a trade with the Sacramento Capitals to complete their five-player roster.
Davenport's acquisition was announced Feb. 6 in conjunction with the team's creation. Newport Beach had traded its first-round choice in Wednesday's draft to the New York Buzz in exchange for Davenport.
Eagle, 29, won three ATP Tour doubles titles last year and was MacPhie's partner in March's Pacific Life Open and Nasdaq-100 Open.
Sharapova, a 15-year-old Russian living in Bradenton, Fla., is ranked 167th on the WTA Tour singles rankings and reached the Wimbledon girls' singles final last year.
The 18-year-old Perry is from Coral Springs, Fla., and ranked 182nd.
The Breakers open their season July 7.
