L.A. woman charged with killing newborn son
Thursday August 14, 2003LOS ANGELES (AP) A 23-year-old woman was charged with killing her newborn son and putting his body in a trunk, the district attorney's office said.
Maria Legarda, of the Los Angeles suburb North Hills, was charged with one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death, the district attorney's office said. She faces a maximum of life in prison.
Legarda was arrested Monday and is being held on $1 million bail.
She allegedly killed her son earlier this week and placed him in a trunk before going to Olive View Medical Center in North Hills, the district attorney's office said. The hospital then notified police.
Additional details were not immediately available.
Legarda moved to the United States from the Philippines about two years ago and worked as a clothing store manager.
