Stockton Record to get $20 million upgrade

Thursday June 19, 2003

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) The (Stockton) Record will upgrade its color offset press and its mailroom to improve the printing quality and publishing speed of the newspaper.

Construction on the project, which is expected to cost $20 million, will begin next spring, the newspaper said.

The decision to invest in a new press facility was made Wednesday by the board of directors of Dow Jones & Co., which purchased the paper last month for $144 million.

The Record, a daily newspaper serving San Joaquin and Calavaras counties, recently purchased new property to house the new press and mailroom. The press will be able to produce a 56-page press run, including 16 color pages, at a rate of about 55,000 copies per hour. The current press has a 48-page capacity, including eight color pages.

The equipment will replace obsolete technology and increase both reproduction quality and publication flexibility, company officials said.

The Record's current press, installed new in 1956, prints by the letterpress process which is rarely used. As of September 2001, only 33 such presses were known to be operating in the United States.
