Lawyers pitch in to help build affordable South L.A. home
SaturdayLOS ANGELES (AP) Twenty-one law firms have joined with city leaders and a branch of Habitat For Humanity to build an affordable home for the Guzman family in South Los Angeles.
Attorneys, summer law associates and staff will donate time over the summer to build the new residence and their firms will donate money for building materials.
Jaime Guzman, his wife, Maricela, and their two children, will work with the construction crew and community volunteers to complete their new home by Aug. 2. The home will be a two-story, 1,324-square-foot house with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a one-car garage.
A groundbreaking will take place Saturday.
``Every law firm involved jumped at the opportunity and enthusiastically supports the project,'' said Manny Abascal, a partner at Latham & Wakins and a coordinator for the project.
The project is affiliated with Buildable Hours Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group that coordinates contributions and volunteer labor from law firms through Habitat For Humanity.
