Ventura County wildfire burns within 150 feet of mobile homes

Tuesday August 24, 2004

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) A fire erupted near the Ventura Freeway on Tuesday afternoon, spreading across 110 acres as flames came within 150 feet of mobile homes, officials said.

The blaze, which had stopped moving within three hours, came down a ridge toward homes in the Newbury Park area west of Thousand Oaks, said to Battalion Chief Keith Mashburn of the county fire department.

About 100 firefighters aided by two helicopters had the blaze 10 percent contained by Tuesday evening.

No homes were threatened and no residents were asked to leave the area, Mashburn said.

There were no reports of injuries, though Mashburn said the fire was ``pretty dangerous because of the erratic winds.''

Flames from a vehicle fire on the freeway near the Conejo Pass were pushed into nearby brush by winds reaching 15 mph, Mashburn said.

Fire engines were to remain at the mobile home park overnight as firefighters worked to put out hot spots.
