Truck filled with yogurt for the homeless is stolen

Monday June 16, 2003

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) A big rig truck carrying $50,000 worth of yogurt earmarked for the homeless was stolen from a nonprofit food warehouse, police said.

Someone broke into the locked parking area of Operation Blessings late Saturday and stole the truck, Police Lt. Mark McFall said Sunday. McFall said a special ``big rig'' detective unit is working the case in hopes of finding the truck before the yogurt is moved.

Police said thieves entered the warehouse during the night, cut a lock on a chain-link fence and drove off with the semi. The keys had been left in the truck.

``These guys are after the cargo,'' McFall said. ``They don't care about the truck and will dump it as soon as they are done with it.''

The big rig is part of a fleet used by the Virginia-based nonprofit organization that helps distribute food to homeless and provides hunger relief around the world, according to Operation Blessings' Web site.

Calls to Operation Blessings' west coast warehouse were not immediately returned.

Riverside is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
