Palo Alto party goer run over twice by SUV dies

Wednesday October 08, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) A young man struck twice by a sport-utility vehicle during a house party melee in Palo Alto over the weekend has died from his injuries.

Chad Snow, 23, of Palo Alto, was taken off life support Tuesday at Stanford Medical, said Santa Clara County deputy district attorney Lane Liroff. He had been declared brain dead by doctors, said his grandmother, Helen Snow.

``I wish he could just snap right out of it,'' Snow said shortly before her grandson's death. ``There's no chance.''

The aspiring rapper was run over twice late Saturday outside a raucous party on Cowper Street in Palo Alto after a fistfight erupted and partygoers spilled out of the house during the altercation.

William Hill, 21, of Santa Cruz, was arrested and booked on a charge of attempted homicide after he allegedly ran over Snow with a Chevy Tahoe. Formal charges are pending the results of further investigation.

Witnesses said Hill struck Snow, drove away and then returned in his vehicle, drove back up onto the curb and ran over the injured man at least one more time.

``Mr. Snow's death increases the number of charges we can consider,'' Liroff said. ``But we are still conducting an investigation to decide what charges, if any, are appropriate.''

Snow grew up in San Francisco. He had written several rap songs and performed at clubs and concerts in the city under the stage name Spekt 1.

``He would write poetry. He was smart as a whip,'' his grandmother said.

Hill remains in the Santa Clara County jail in lieu of $2 million bail. He is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

Over the weekend, neighbors of Hill in Santa Cruz said they weren't surprised by the violent incident and complained of other disturbances at the accused man's home in the past.
