Delhi high school student shot, two men sought
Tuesday April 15, 2003DELHI, Calif. (AP) A 13-year-old Delhi middle school student was shot in the hip as he walked to class Tuesday in what police believe was a gang-related attack.
The boy was transported by ambulance to a Turlock hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said Merced County Undersheriff Bill Blake.
Blake said the shooting occurred at about 8:15 a.m. in a parking lot at the Delhi Education Park, a facility containing both a middle school and a high school.
``He was walking with a high school student who is a validated gang member when they were approached,'' Blake said.
He said the two boys exchanged words with two unidentified adult males in a white Lincoln town car. A single shot was fired from the car from about 50 feet away, Blake said.
``The bullet went through his backpack and a spiral notebook and went into his left hip,'' Blake said.
He said they do not know if the victim was the intended target, ``but we do know the victim was carrying a large knife in his pocket.''
``We generally believe this was gang-related,'' Blake said.
Police had no suspects by midday Tuesday.
