Two killed, one critically injured in Richmond shootings
Tuesday June 17, 2003RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) Two people were killed and a third was critically injured Monday night when a man opened fire on a car parked outside a Richmond public housing complex, police said.
The shootings occurred outside the Triangle Circle complex about 8:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found two of the victims a male and a female, both in their late teens or early 20's, dead inside the car from multiple gunshot wounds, said Richmond police Lt. Johan Simon.
The third victim, also female, was discovered on the ground about 10 feet away from the car. The position of her body and the car's open door suggested she ``had apparently escaped or tried to get away from the shooting once it occurred,'' Simon said.
A witness reported seeing a man standing above her and shooting at her as she lay on the ground, Simon said.
The injured victim, who appeared to be pregnant, was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where her condition was extremely critical early Tuesday.
``It's a cold blooded, cowardly act,'' Simon said. ``We are going to exhaust every resource that we have available to catch this guy.''
Residents of the housing complex told police they did not recognize the victims or their vehicle.
The killings bring Richmond's murder toll for the year to 19, compared to 29 for all of 2002, Simon said.
