Man drowns in Merced River in Yosemite National Park
Tuesday August 05, 2003YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) A 20-year-old man drowned in the Merced River while swimming with friends at Emerald Pool, Yosemite National Park officials said Tuesday.
Melvin L. Paballa, of Milpitas, attempted to swim across the river at Emerald Pool above Vernal Fall when he went under Monday. Paballa's friends pulled him from the river. Bystanders and park rangers performed CPR on the man, but he died at the scene.
