The solution? An internship at UPN 31 KMAX. We offer opportunities to college students in several departments.

This webpage provides an outline of internship opportunities in our different departments.

NEWS ASSISTANT

Educational Experience: Learn the inner workings of a news operation; emphasis on journalism; communication skills; gain an understanding of what makes a good television news story and how a news program is assembled from origination to completion.

Responsibilities: Gathering stories and information from news services; filing scripts; accompanying reporters on stories in the field; assisting in writing local and national stories; researching and coordinating news stories. This internship is NOT production-oriented, but rather is journalism-oriented.

Requirements: Basic understanding of current events; ability to work well under pressure; ability to meet deadlines; at least one broadcast writing class; exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Shifts: Available mornings, afternoons and/or evenings.

Public Affairs

Educational Experience: Learn how community organizations integrate into the mainstream of television sales, promotions, and public relations; gain understanding of broadcasting rules as they relate to the government.

Responsibilities: Write weekly on-air announcements about community events; help organize community events and outreach programs; produce special projects and public service announcements.

Requirements: Excellent writing and phone skills; at least one class in broadcast writing and/or English.

Shifts: Available mornings and/or afternoons.

SALES/MARKETING/RESEARCH

Educational Experience: Learn about television sales; includes skills in writing sales proposals and cultivating new accounts. Also acquire knowledge in merchandising, marketing and ratings.

Responsibilities: Assist in the creation of proposals, writing and entering orders, research; participate in sales meetings and day-to-day sales operations/procedures.

Requirements: Excellent writing skills, quick thinker and "can-do" attitude. Class in advertising or marketing preferred. Basic knowledge of ratings.

Shifts: Available mornings and/or afternoons.

TRAFFIC

Educational Experience: Gain knowledge of the station's inner workings through the placement on the daily log of commercials, promotions and public service announcements.

Responsibilities: Assisting in the production of the daily log; pulling sales reports and contracts.

Requirements: 10-key experience, detail and number oriented; ability to meet deadlines; self-motivated people person.

Shifts: Available mornings and/or afternoons.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Educational Experience: Learn the inner work of a full design studio. Gain skills in production of print ads, in-store displays, sets, on-air graphics and other print materials. Hands-on experience with Macintosh computers.

Responsibilities: Work with art director in all phases of ad design, merchandising, and other promotional projects.

Requirements: Art or design major with a class in one of these areas: typography, commercial design or advertising design.

Shifts: Available mornings and/or afternoons.

PRODUCTION

Educational Experience: Gain skills in the creation, execution and technical aspects of television production.

Responsibilities: Assist production crew in all phases of commercial production, remote shooting, script writing, graphics, set-up, lighting, and teardown.

Requirements: At least two classes in television production; willingness to work hard.

Shifts: Available mornings and/or afternoons.

ENGINEERING

Educational Experience: Gain hands on knowledge of the installation, repair, and operation of a state of the art technical center. Get hands on troubleshooting and repair experience of audio and video production equipment, and a real world exposure to commercial broadcasting operations.

Responsibilities: Help install, repair and adjust audio and video equipment including satellite earth stations, microwave systems, cameras, video tape recorders, switchers and high power transmitters. Provide preventative and emergency maintenance of broadcast equipment.

Requirements: Two years of electronics training or equivalent life experience. Familiarity with basic test equipment including oscilloscopes, intimaters, spectrum analyzers, and experience with proper hand soldering techniques. Must be able to follow and understand schematic diagrams and flow charts.

Shifts: Available mornings or afternoons.

PROMOTION MARKETING/PUBLIC RELATIONS

Educational Experience: Learn how to garner better ratings with public relations and promotion of the television station. Gain knowledge of design and execution of contests; discover the ins and outs of on-air, exterior and client promotions. Write copy for on-air use and learn some production techniques.

Responsibilities: Assisting in the creation and execution of on-air, client and exterior promotions for the station; writing press releases for upcoming events/programs and voice-over copy; phoning distributors for promotional material; assisting in the writing of newsletters.

Requirements: Must have excellent writing skills, phone skills and follow-through; public relations class preferred; ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines; creativity and enthusiasm a must.
