Maples Pavilion renovation ahead of schedule

Friday August 20, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) The Stanford basketball teams won't need to use Santa Clara University as their temporary home court in December after all.

Stanford athletic director Ted Leland said Thursday the $30 million renovation of Maples Pavilion is ahead of schedule and basketball games will be held there in December.

The arena originally wasn't expected to be ready for use until the beginning of the Pac-10 season, in January 2005, meaning the teams would play at Santa Clara's Levy Center.

Now, the first home game will be Dec. 10, when the Cardinal women host Pepperdine.

``We are very excited about all of the new amenities that have been added to the facility for our fans and student-athletes and are eager to open it up to the public,'' Leland said.

One men's game will still be held off-campus an exhibition game against Concordia on Nov. 13 at Santa Clara. And four women's games will be at Levy Center two exhibition contests and two-regular season games.
